Just a little bit of information and background of the islands of Saldanha: Immediately north of Yzerfontein stretches the West Coast National Park comprising the Postberg Nature Reserve, Langebaan Lagoon as well as the six islands in and around Saldanha Bay. Five of which are managed by the West Coast National Park. These islands can tell many tales of sunken treasure, ship wrecks, naval battles, wild animals, captured prisoners and armed skirmishes. They include Schaapen, Meeuw, Malgas, Marcus, Jutten and Vondeling islands.  The islands attracted the early European visitors because of the seals, birds and penguins which inhabited them. This exhilirating boat adventure will depart from either the Club Mykonos Marina or from the Yacht Club situated on the Langebaan Lagoon.  Mr Eddie Papier will be our site guide on board the boat island tour as he has a wealth of information to share with our guests about the different islands of Saldanha Bay, the history of the respective islands and the breeding colonies of the different kinds of birds that migrate to these islands every year. Mr Papier used to be a whaler himself at Donkergat and a retired Park Ranger at the West Coast National Park. He will enlighten guests on the history of the whaling station that Langebaan was known for all those many years ago.

Although our guests won’t be allowed to step onto these islands, as they are closely monitored by the Department of Environmental Affairs, The West Coast National Park and the South African Defence Force, we will go as close as possible to appreciate the many breeding colonies that live on them. Experience the Cape Fur Seals and Dusky Dolphins frolicking in the lagoon. Try to spot the albino rabbits on Schaapen Island and look out for the African Penguin that is on the brink of extinction.

KRAALBAAI

Our next stop will be to Kraalbaai, where guests will be allowed to swim and enjoy the crystal clear waters of the lagoon.  Our skipper, guide and her assistant will anchor there and prepare a typical South African Braai to compliment the wonderful experience of being on a boat island trip on the Langebaan Lagoon.
